Originally from Seattle, Ms. Shank relocated to New York in 1997 and has recorded 4 previous albums as a leader, the most recent being A Spirit Free: Abbey Lincoln Songbook which received “Best of 2007″ accolades in Downbeat, Jazz Times, Newsday, and many others. “This vocalist makes lyrics believable, invents like an instrumentalist, and has an ear second to none for little-known and unknown tunes,” wrote the Boston Globe’s Bob Blumenthal. At Blackbird Wine, she’ll reunite with long-time collaborator John Stowell with whom she shares an empathetic musical bond, to celebrate her newest and most personal album to date, Mosiac. Shank combines jazz originals, standards, world music, French songs, folk/pop tunes, and open improvisation in an adventurous, genre-bending style that inspired Abbey Lincoln to call her “an original; a singer with a sound.
“Kendra Shank’s delectable voice–warm-toned, fine-grained, quietly sexy–sets her well apart from the crowd.” -Terry Teachout, TIME

“…a standout…a unique and immediately identifiable sound and style. … -Don Heckman, LOS ANGELES TIMES

“…(a) striking presence…her musicianship is powerful.” -Nat Hentoff, WALL STREET JOURNAL

Kendra will be joined by Portland-based guitarist John Stowell. A few notes about John:

“In the age of mediocrity and clones, John Stowell’s uniqueness and originality are a breath of fresh air. I love playing with him.” Paul Horn

“John Stowell plays jazz, but he doesn’t use any of the clichés; he has an incredible originality. John is a master creator.” Larry Coryell

“More guitarists would play like John Stowell if they knew how.” Herb Ellis
