States PDX Jazz General Manager Don Lucoff, “Bill has been a mentor and friend for over 20 years. since we first worked together in Pennsylvania on a festival in the Pocono Mountains. I am appreciative for the opportunity and trust he has bestowed in preparing me to lead PDX Jazz to the next level and I am very excited for what we are planning for next year’s festival. PDX Jazz, the presenting organization of the Portland Jazz festival announces the retirement of its founder and artistic director Bill Royston. Don Lucoff and the board will carry forward the vision programmatically that Royston initiated when the festival was founded in 2003, and Lucoff will continue in his role as the organization’s managing director. PDX Jazz has already confirmed many of its corporate sponsors and support from foundations and granting organization’s for next years festival, with an established operating budget for its upcoming fiscal cycle set to commence July 1.

This year’s PDX Jazz @ Tony Starlight’s Spring concert series will continue on Saturday, May 21 at 8PM with the Switzerland-based Colin Vallon Trio (pianist Colin Vallon, bassist Patrice Moret, and drummer Samuel Rohrer), who will make their US premiere in support of their new ECM album, Rruga.

PDX Jazz, the presenting organization of the Portland Jazz Festival in partnership with the Mission Theater is set to unveil monthly programing beginning Thursday, May 19 with the San Francisco based quartet Tin Hat (formerly the Tin Hat Trio). The series will continue June 23 with the Norwegian based In The Country who previously played to a sold out audience at Norse Hall during the 2010 festival.
