Dozens of Free Performances Added to Festival Schedule
Highlighting Portland and Northwest Artists
Alaska Airlines & Horizon Air Portland Jazz Festival presented by The Oregonian A&E will present numerous free performances all over Portland throughout the festival schedule, February 13-22. Various showcase performances will be present at The Art Bar at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, Rogue Ales Public House, West CafÃ©, Dragon Fish at the Paramount Hotel, and the ongoing PDX Jazz @ RiverPlace series at the RiverPlace Hotel featuring Portland vocalist Rebecca Kilgore, saxophonist Devin Phillips, and pianist/vocalist/humorist Dave Frishberg.
Frishberg will actually be featured twice, performing in the trio of John Gross, Dave Frishberg & Charlie Doggett (February 14) and with the Rebecca Kilgore & Dave Frishberg duo (February 21). Both performances will take place at The Art Bar at PCPA from 9:00 pm to 12:00 am. Devin Phillips’ quartet will perform at The Art Bar on Friday, February 13, and a collaboration between the avant-garde quintet Blue Cranes and the classical Paxselin Quartet will be showcased February 20.
The PDX Jazz @ RiverPlace project has filled the RiverPlace Hotel with jazz every Friday and Saturday since last May with no cover charge and no minimum. Popular vocalist Mary Kadderly will perform February 13 (8:00 to 11:00 pm) and the Upper Left Trio will be featured on Saturday, February 21. In between, there will be an accent of youthful jazz performers with bassist/vocalist Kate Davis (February 14) and guitarist Charlie Stanford (February 20).
Three additional performances will be held at Rogue Ales Public House, 9:00 pm to 12:00 am, with the trio Scenes, featuring John Stowell, Jeff Johnson & John Bishop (February 13), Eddie Parente Gypsy Jazz (February 14, and the Eugene nouveau-tango quintet Mood Area 52 (February 22). Dan Balmer Trio will perform at Rogue’s new east side pub the Green Dragon on February 20.
The guitar-vocal duo of John & Yuko Keyser (February 14) and guitarist Anson Wright (February 21) will be featured at Dragon Fish at the Paramount Hotel, 9:00 pm to 12:00 am, and the Anomalous Quintet (February 13) and Michelle Medler Trio (February 20) will perform at the West CafÃ©, 8:00 to 11:00 pm.
There will also be late night jam sessions, hosted by members of the Portland Jazz Orchestra-the resident ensemble of the Portland Jazz Festival-that are open to all musicians at the Cave at the Green Onion (February 13-14 at 11:59 pm) and The Cleaners at the Ace Hotel (February 20-21 at 11:00 pm). Like all of the other performances, the jam sessions are free and open to the public.
In addition, there will be over fifty jazz performances presented PDX Jazz “Community Partners,” ranging from such traditional Portland jazz clubs as The Cave at the Green Onion, Wilf’s at Union Station, Tugboat Brewing Company and Tony Starlight’s to jazz at the Heathman Hotel and the Palm Court Lobby and the London Grill at the Benson Hotel. The Cave will feature the Andrew Oliver Sextet (February 13), Bryant Allard Quartet (February 14), Nancy King (February 18), Nancy Curtin (February 19), Wally Schnalle (February 20) and Alan Jones Sextet (February 21). Tony Pacini (February 13), John Gilmore (February 14), Ron Steen (February 18), Michael Allen Harrison (February 19), and Shelly Rudolph (February 20) are among the artists that will be presented at Wilf’s. Many of the participating jazz clubs have applicable cover charges
Community Partner ticketed performances will include Dirty Dozen Brass Band with Trombone Shorty (February 13) and Afro-Cuban All-Stars (February 21) presented by Double Tee Concerts. Crystal Ballroom will present Greyboy Allstars (February 15), and Creative Music Guild will present Lebanese saxophonist Christine Sehanoui (February 16). The Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble will perform at the Old Church (February 17), and the Jazz Society of Oregon will stage its annual benefit with the father/son tandem of Mel & Chris Brown (February 18).
Following a theme of Somethin’ Else: Blue Note Records @ 70, celebrating the 70th anniversary of Blue Note Records, all Portland Jazz Festival ticketed concerts will feature current and past Blue Note artists. The package of Blue Note anniversary events will include performances, plus Jazz Conversations with Blue Note officials and artists, panel discussions with jazz writers and journalists, and archival Blue Note film screenings. Current Blue Note artists, trumpeter Terence Blanchard, sax man Joe Lovano, pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and vocalists Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, and Patricia Barber, will headline the 10-day event, which will also feature Blue Note heritage artists McCoy Tyner, Bobby Hutcherson, Lou Donaldson, and Pat Martino.
