Celebrating Buddy Rich’s 100th birthday means a celebration of the drummer’s overt, exciting style and also his boundless energy. There’s no one better to execute that plan than Portland native Alan Jones. Known for his frequent touring in the US and Europe with jazz heavyweights such as Cecil Taylor, Randy Brecker, Esperanza Spalding, John Abercrombie, Ralph Towner and countless others, as well as his dedicated education of the upcoming generation of jazz through the AJAM music academy, Alan has put together an evening of music arranged for his own sextet plus three of Portland’s most important and significant drummers: Mel Brown, the undisputed godfather of Portland jazz; Chris Brown, active band leader and next generation jazz ambassador; and Carlton Jackson, celebrated multi-genre drummer, vmusic historian and influential KMHD radio host. The program will include re-arrangements of Rich’s classics, new compositions by Alan in the style of Buddy Rich, and for the grand finale, FOUR DRUMMERS, playing off each other, trading, battling, in the classic spirit of unbridled respect and the sheer love of drumming. This will surely be an evening dedicated to the thrilling overt style of the “World’s Greatest Drummer”.
“(Alan Jones’s) energy is extreme, there is never a lethargic moment.” – The Los Angeles Times
