SOLD OUT!: Amina Claudine Myers: Poems for Piano
February 19 | 5:00 pm- $20 - $25
Amina Claudine Myers is a critically acclaimed pianist whose rich and luscious playing style has been informed by blues, jazz and gospel music that is seamless and instantly recognizable. Born in Blackwell, Arkansas, Myers started singing, playing the piano and directing choirs at an early age. In the early 1960s, she moved to Chicago, where she worked with musicians such as Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons and participated in the AACM. In 1969, Myers recorded her first jazz album with Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, and in 1976 she relocated to New York City where she focused on her own compositions and expanded it into the realm of Off-Broadway productions while continuing to perform and record as a pianist and organist. A couple of years later she began touring in Europe with the Lester Bowie Quintet and his New York Organ Ensemble, and in 1985 she joined Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra. Likewise, Myers has been part of notable collaborations with Bill Laswell, Marian McPartland, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Archie Shepp and many other musical stalwarts. Myers released her first solo album Poems for Piano: The Piano Music of Marion Brown in 1979, which will form the basis of her debut solo piano performance at the 2017 Biamp PDX Jazz Festival.
