Andrei Kitaev is a Russian born jazz pianist who Ahmad Jamal once remarked “deserves to be heard at the best concert halls in the world.” Many musicians and listeners, both local and around the world, consider Kitaev an unsung musical genius with the thirst for the musical expression only jazz can offer with a penchant to explore, develop, and present one’s soul on the ivories of the piano. Kitaev started his formal classical piano training at the early age of six under the tutelage of his aunt, a famous concert pianist in Moscow. However, Andrei’s love affair with jazz led him to cross over from the rigors and commitment of the classical world to the ever-expanding universe of jazz piano which eventually brought him to the US. Over the years, he has performed alongside Elvin Jones, Lou Rawls, Arturo Sandoval, Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Gomez, John Clayton and Dean Martin, and now Kitaev holds the honor of being this years featured Portland pianist in the PDX Piano Perspectives Series.
Kitaev will be performing part of his set solo on piano, and he will also be joined by Al Criado on bass and Mark Griffith on drums, making this Piano Perspectives concert a very unique experience in the intimate environment of Classic Pianos.
“(Kitaev is a) warm and technically brilliant pianist…” – San Francisco Examiner
