Bill Mays is a jazz pianist hailing from Sacramento, California. From 1969 to the early 1980s, Mays worked as a studio session musician in Los Angeles. He has been an accompanist to singers Al Jarreau, Peggy Lee, Anita O’Day, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan and Dionne Warwick, and he has also worked with artists such as Don Ellis, Mel Lewis, Bob Mintzer, Ron Carter, Maria Schneider, Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, Bud Shank, Sonny Stitt, Lalo Schifrin and Frank Zappa among many others. In 1984, he moved to New York City and began to do more work as a bandleader, composer, and arranger. He has recorded over two dozen albums under his own name, and has been heard on hundreds more by others. Mays will be appearing at the 2017 Biamp PDX Jazz Festival in support of his new solo piano double-CD set, Front Row Seat, a collection of intricate and sparkling interpretations of songs by Mays, Duke Ellington, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn and other legendary composers.
“One of the masters of color and touch among today’s pianists, Mays makes the most of possibilities in original compositions…and an attractive batch of works by others.” – JazzTimes
