Blues People: Negro Music in White America
Free Lecture led by Reed College Professor Pancho Savery
October 25 | 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm- Free
PDX Jazz is proud to present Discover Jazz – an adult education series with Reed College Professor and PDX Jazz Board Member Pancho Savery. Mr. Savery will host the evening’s event that includes lecture and discussion. In this presentation, Savery will discuss Amiri Baraka’s writings.
In 1963, Amiri Baraka, still then LeRoi Jones, published Blues People: Negro Music in White America. Nearly fifty-five years later, it is time for a reexamination of this seminal text. Do his ideas on the role and function of black music still carry weight? Have the criticisms of the text, notably those of Ralph Ellison, stood the test of time?
Savery will attempt to answer these questions and more! This event is free to the public on a first-come, first-served seating basis. Due to the popularity of these events, we advise an early arrival.
