Pianist, organist, keyboardist and composer Craig Taborn has become a mainstay on the renowned jazz label ECM Records. Taborn has a range of styles, and often adapts his playing to the nature of the instrument and the sounds that he can make it produce. He started playing piano and Moog synthesizer as an adolescent and was influenced at an early stage by a wide range of musical styles, most significantly by recordings of free jazz and contemporary classical music. To this date, Taborn has released six albums under his own name and appeared on more than 80 as a sideman including collaborations with Roscoe Mitchell, Dave Douglas, David Torn, Drew Gress, Evan Parker, Christian McBride and Dave Holland. In 2011, DownBeat chose Taborn as winner of the Electric Keyboard category, as well as Rising Star in both the Piano and Organ categories. Likewise, JazzTimes ranked Taborn in their 2013 Critics’ Poll as Best Piano Player, and in 2014, the Jazz Journalists Association awarded him the Pianist of the Year Award. Taborn will be touring in support of his quartet’s newest disc on ECM, Daylight Ghosts, set for release on February 3, 2017. His appearance at this year’s Festival will shine the spotlight on his keyboard wizardry and impeccable improvisational skill set.
