Donny McCaslin is a celebrated, Grammy® Award-nominated saxophonist and composer from Santa Clara, California. As a child he joined his father’s band at the age of 12, and as a teenager he made his debut at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival before embarking on tours of Europe and Japan. Subsequently, McCaslin received a full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, and in 1991 he moved to New York City which led him to performing with the Gil Evans Orchestra, Maria Schneider, John Medeski, Uri Craine, Antonio Sanchez , Dave Douglas and many others before becoming a bandleader in his own right with 11 albums to date under his name.
After moving his music in a more electric direction in the 2000’s, McCaslin began collaborating with David Bowie in 2014, which later led McCaslin to become Bowie’s saxophonist for the rock icon’s 2016 album, Blackstar. In honor of his passing, the Blackstar band featuring McCaslin, bassist Tim Lefebvre (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Saturday Night Live) , keyboardist Jason Lindner , and drummer Mark Guiliana (Meshell Ndegeocello, Brad Mehldau) recorded Beyond Now, McCaslin’s debut for Motema Music. It is an album of music inspired by their extraordinary experience collaborating with one of the greatest artists of all-time on his final album and the basis of the group’s 2017 tour.
“Though McCaslin is a sought-after improvising jazz saxist with a rugged post-Coltrane sound, his dedication to Bowie represents that niche of rock and hip-hop-influenced jazz that is rooted in the accumulation of repeated hooks against rhythm-section crescendos of rising heat.” – The Guardian
