Gerald Clayton is a four-time GRAMMY®-nominated pianist/composer who formally began his musical journey at the prestigious Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where he received the 2002 Presidential Scholar of the Arts Award. Continuing his scholarly pursuits, he studied piano with both Billy Childs at USC and NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron at The Manhattan School of Music, leading Clayton to subsequently take second place in the 2006 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Piano Competition. His music is a celebration of the inherent differences in musical perspectives that promote true artistic synergy that have led him to perform and record with Charles Lloyd (including his 2016 Biamp PDX Jazz Festival appearance), Diana Krall, Roy Hargrove, Dianne Reeves, Ravi Coltrane, Terence Blanchard, Ambrose Akinmusire, Kendrick Scott, John Scofield, Terri Lyne Carrington, Avishai Cohen and many others. Clayton’s discography on Verve and Concord Records as a leader is a reflection of his search for honest expression in every note, full of harmonic curiosity and critical awareness wherein he develops musical narratives that unfold results of both deliberate contemplation and chance discovery.

The ranks of young pianists are littered with technical virtuosos, but Clayton stands apart: He has touch, too. He’s a warm and graceful player, with plenty of personal nuance…” – NPR
