King Louie & Renato Caranto
February 17 | 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm- FREE
Organist Louis “King Louie” Pain and soulful saxophonist Renato Caranto have been musical partners for over two decades now. The two first teamed up as seminal members of the Mel Brown B-3 Organ Group when that band, dubbed “Jimmy Mak’s signature group” by The Oregonian, began its 20-year run at the storied jazz club in 1997. Along the way, Louis and Renato have played countless other gigs together in various groups: at Jimmy Mak’s, the Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival, and elsewhere throughout the Northwest.
In recent years, Renato has toured with Esperanza Spalding and the late country star Merle Haggard, but he and Louis have never stopped working together, including on a pair of CDs produced by Louis, “Rock Me Baby” in 2016 (featuring vocalist LaRhonda Steele), and “Live at Riverhouse Jazz” in 2017 (featuring LaRhonda along with Andy Stokes & Lisa Mann), both of which received 4-star reviews in Downbeat. At Bluehour, Louis & Renato will be joined by one of Portland’s up & coming drummers: Micah Hummel.
