At the age of 20, Pat Martino was signed to Prestige Records and had already become an important figure in both the Philadelphia and New York jazz scenes playing in all of the major name organ trios. He has performed with a diverse group of artists including Chick Corea, Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons and Richard Grove Holmes to name a few and has toured as a leader since 1967. He currently teaches jazz guitar at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, furthering the legacy of his style and bringing others to the instrument. Martino last played the festival in 2009, and on this occasion he’ll be joined by his working trio featuring organist Pat Bianchi and drummer Carmen Intorre.
“Martino’s blazing technique, his swinging pulse and the deep, dark sound he gets from his guitar, ingredients that have been part of his distinct sound since he burst on the scene in the early 1960s.” – JazzTimes
Named an NEA Jazz Master in 2010, Kenny Barron has been able to win over audiences since his beginnings in Philadelphia playing with Philly Joe Jones at age 19. When he moved to New York, he played with Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan and James Moody and soon found himself playing beside Dizzy Gillespie. Even though his work as a sideman has been lauded, his work as a leader has garnered even more attention. With nine Grammy®-Award nominations for recordings on Verve, Barron’s trademark playing with unique melodies and diverse rhythmic drive has become recognized all around the world. Barron and his longstanding trio including bassist, Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer, Johnathan Blake will make their Portland Festival debut.
“His touch is the stuff of legend: high polish but also subtlety and sensitivity, every note throwing a soft glow that you can all but see.” – JazzTimes
