PDX Jazz is proud to present our next installment in the Discover Jazz adult education series, The Devil’s Horn: The Beginnings of the Jazz Tenor Saxophone. Hosted by KMHD Radio personality Mark Montesano, this presentation featuring a mix of lecture and music will explore the history of one of the most important instruments in jazz. How did the tenor saxophone evolve from a novelty instrument to the quintessential jazz voice, able to express the whole range of human emotion from raucous screams to seductive whispers? The evening will focus on the pioneering ways of tenor sax legends Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young as well as the musicians who followed their lead and expanded on it including Ben Webster, Don Byas, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz and more.

This event will take place at the Literary Arts office in downtown Portland. Due to the popularity of these events, we recommend early arrival as seating is limited.
