Maria Schneider’s music has been hailed by critics as “evocative, majestic, magical, heart-stoppingly gorgeous, and beyond categorization.” She and her orchestra became widely known starting in 1994 when they released their first recording, Evanescence. There, Schneider began to develop her personal way of writing for what would become her 18-member collective, made up of many of the finest musicians in jazz today, tailoring her compositions to distinctly highlight the uniquely creative voices of the group. The Maria Schneider Orchestra has received numerous commissions and guest-conducting invites, working with over 85 groups from over 30 countries. This performance marks the orchestra’s long overdue Portland debut. Schneider’s music blurs the lines between genres, making her long list of commissioners quite varied, stretching from Jazz at Lincoln Center and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, to collaborating with David Bowie. She is among a select few to have received Grammy® Awards in both jazz and classical categories, including 12 nominations […] Buy Tickets | Find out more »

All tickets previously purchased for both the early and late shows will be honored.  Jazz drummer, bandleader and educator Ralph Peterson achieved early notoriety as Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers second drummer in 1983 and has continued in his footsteps with mentoring young talent throughout his career. Over the years, Peterson has also played with jazz heavyweights such as Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, Charles Lloyd, Branford Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Jon Faddis, Dewey Redman, Geri Allen, Betty Carter, Stanley Cowell and Wynton Marsalis. But arguably his most impressive work has been featured with his own trio, TriAngular, whose first iteration put out their album on Blue Note Records in 1988. In early 2016, Peterson resurrected TriAngular for only the third time in nearly 30 years with its new album, TriAngular III, and this time being aided by the surefire musical chemistry of […] Buy Tickets | Find out more »

David Valdez and Jasnam Daya Singh ( formerly known as Weber Iago ) joined forces in 2010 and put together a group with focus on compositions and arrangements that encompassed various musical styles. The idea was to work long forms into the Jazz realm, creating a canvas for structured writing with plenty of space for improvisation. Jasnam contributed original compositions as well as arrangements of material from the Brazilian and American Songbook; David Valdez engaged a few other composers and arrangers to contribute material to the ensemble as well. In terms of configuration, the Jasnam Daya Singh & David Valdez Chamber Ensemble has gone thru a few incarnations in which different instruments such as Violin and Bassoon were used. For the Mezzo Monk Project to be premiered at the Portland Jazz festival 2017 , they’ll have the participation of great Sax Player Tomas Pereira.
