David Valdez and Jasnam Daya Singh ( formerly known as Weber Iago ) joined forces in 2010 and put together a group with focus on compositions and arrangements that encompassed various musical styles. The idea was to work long forms into the Jazz realm, creating a canvas for structured writing with plenty of space for improvisation. Jasnam contributed original compositions as well as arrangements of material from the Brazilian and American Songbook; David Valdez engaged a few other composers and arrangers to contribute material to the ensemble as well. In terms of configuration, the Jasnam Daya Singh & David Valdez Chamber Ensemble has gone thru a few incarnations in which different instruments such as Violin and Bassoon were used. For the Mezzo Monk Project to be premiered at the Portland Jazz festival 2017 , they’ll have the participation of great Sax Player Tomas Pereira. NOTE: Show is now a single general admission performance at 3pm at Winningstad Theatre. All tickets previously purchased for both the early and late shows will be honored.  Grammy® Award-nominated quintet Kneebody possesses a sound that is an amalgamation of explosive rock energy paralleled with high-level nuanced chamber ensemble playing, with highly wrought compositions that are balanced with adventurous, no-holds-barred improvising. All “sounds-like” references can be set aside; this band has created a genre, style, and musical language all its own that allows its musicians to change tempo and key at the drop of a dime. Made up of keyboardist Adam Benjamin, trumpeter Shane Endsley, electric bassist Kaveh Rastegar, saxophonist Ben Wendel and drummer Nate Wood, Kneebody came together in Los Angeles in 2001, and since then, each band member has amassed an impressive list of credits and accomplishments over the years all while the band has continued to thrive and grow […] Buy Tickets | Find out more »

Heath
In celebration of Dizzy Gillespie’s 100th birthday, the 2017 Biamp PDX Jazz Festival presents an exciting double bill featuring the legendary Heath Brothers along with Javon Jackson’s Sax Appeal. Jimmy and Albert “Tootie” Heath have recorded and collaborated with nearly all the jazz greats of the last 50 years. Saxophonist and NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath spent his formative years working with Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Erroll Garner, and Coleman Hawkins. Likewise, drummer Tootie Heath has recorded and performed with John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Art Farmer, Sonny Rollins, Nina Simone, Herbie Hancock, Yusef Lateef and many others. While the two brothers recorded together on Jimmy’s solo records in the 1960s, it wasn’t until they formed The Heath Brothers with Percy Heath on bass and Stanley Cowell on piano that the Heaths became household names in the world of hard bop jazz. The Heath Brothers have released 10 albums, including Endurance, […] Buy Tickets | Find out more »

The Cookers are an all-star septet under the musical direction of David Weiss that summons an aggressive mid ‘60s spirit with a potent collection of expansive post-bop originals marked by all the requisite killer instincts and pyrotechnic playing expected of some of the heaviest hitters on the scene today. Core members Billy Harper, Cecil McBee, Eddie Henderson and Billy Hart all came up in the heady era of the mid ‘60s. It was a period that found the dimensions of hard bop morphing from their original designs, and each member helped facilitate the process as players in some of the most important bands of the era. Hart and Henderson were members of Herbie Hancock’s groundbreaking Mwandishi group; Cecil McBee anchored Charles Lloyd’s classic ’60s quartet; Billy Harper was part of Lee Morgan’s last group, as well as being a member of Max Roach’s Quartet and Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers; while George Cables held […] Buy Tickets | Find out more »
