The Alan Jones Academy of Music or “AJAM,” is a unique music education system. It’s a place where dedicated people have the opportunity to learn not just about music, but also what it means to develop as a creative human being. Founded in 2007 by Drummer, Composer and Berklee alumni Alan Jones, AJAM sets itself apart with program offerings designed to engage and follow musicians from youth through the end of their days, and in the process build a strong foundation of knowledge based on the pillars of rhythm, melody, harmony and tone. AJAM provides an environment for students to take both weekly private lessons AND play in an ensemble. Those that take advantage of this multi-dimensional approach progress exponentially in their musicality, and are able to use the theoretical and practical studies learned in their private lessons immediately in a real world ensemble setting. The back and forth blending of weekly […] Find out more »

Dan Balmer is one of only five people to be members of both The Oregon Music Hall of Fame and the Jazz Society of Oregon Hall of Fame. Go By Plane is a collaboration of Portland-based musicians Balmer, keyboardist Clay Giberson and drummer Micah Kassell who play a self-described style of “space age jazz fusion” that incorporates elements of modern jazz and rock that flows but with a restrained intensity – a very tasty brew that will certainly engage your ears and mind. www.danbalmer.com Find out more »

PJCE Ensemble shot MJF
The Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble offers a rare opportunity to hear works by student composers and their mentors for our 12-member jazz chamber orchestra at the same concert. The student composers, or “grasshoppers,” involved in this ambitious project come from two Portland metro area high schools, and from Portland Community College. With their professional mentors— PSU Jazz professor emeritus Charley Gray, Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra Co-Director Michelle Medler, and Mt. Hood Community College jazz instructor Ryan Meagher—each student has composed a new piece for the PJCE. All of these students have composed before, but not for a large professional ensemble, and the opportunity to do so represents a unique and monumental education opportunity. It’s a rare opportunity for the composers and listeners alike. www.pjce.org Buy Tickets | Find out more »
