Ornette Coleman Delivers a Paradoxical Performance
February 16, 2008Dissonant, yet harmonious… Chaotic, yet moving, beautiful… Explosive, yet tender… Only such vague terms can describe the legendary sound of Ornette Coleman. Brandishing alto sax, trumpet, and violin, Coleman and his band wooed a full house at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Friday night with soaring, lifelike glissandi, haunting melodies, and mind-turning free-form improvisation. As the first headlining show, Coleman’s fantastic performance set a perfect tone for the 2008 Portland Jazz Festival.
