PDX Jazz announces the retirement of founder and artistic director Bill RoystonMay 23, 2011
PDX Jazz, the presenting organization of the Portland Jazz festival announces the retirement of its founder and artistic director Bill Royston. Don Lucoff and the board will carry forward the vision programmatically that Royston initiated when the festival was founded in 2003, and Lucoff will continue in his role as the organization’s managing director. PDX Jazz has already confirmed many of its corporate sponsors and support from foundations and granting organization’s for next years festival, with an established operating budget for its upcoming fiscal cycle set to commence July 1.
States PDX Jazz board president, Tom Smith, “We will miss Bill and his amazingly creative personality. He will always remain a friend of the festival. Lucoff and the board look forward to moving ahead with renewed vision and vigor as we move towards February, 2012.”

States Don Lucoff, “Bill has been a mentor and friend for over 20 years. since we first worked together in Pennsylvania on a festival in the Pocono Mountains. I am appreciative for the opportunity and trust he has bestowed in preparing me to lead PDX Jazz to the next level and I am very excited for what we are planning for next year’s festival. Portland has been going through a transformative period and the local jazz community gives me tremendous energy and optimism for what will enfold. My vision in this expanded role is one of collaboration with the board, staff and our dedicated volunteers.
