PDX Jazz @ The Mission Theater Presents: Tin Hat set to Premiere May 19

Posted on by intern

PDX Jazz, the presenting organization of the Portland Jazz Festival in partnership with the Mission Theater is set to unveil monthly programming beginning Thursday, May 19 at 8pm with the San Francisco based Tin Hat.

Since Tin Hat’s formation in 1997, original group members Carla Kihlstedt (violin), Rob Burger (accordion/piano), and Mark Orton (guitar) have expanded their trio by inviting special guests to join them on their recordings, among them are such luminaries as Tom Waits, Willie Nelson and John Zorn, as well as luminescent friends like clarinetist Ben Goldberg and harpist Zeena Parkins. After Rob Burger left the group in late 2004, Goldberg became a permanent member. They are now also joined by newcomer Rob Reich on accordion and piano.

Their writing focuses on crafting evocative melodies, subtle textures and elegant arrangements. Though they never pitch their tent in any musical camp for very long, their atmospheric sound sways gracefully between the worlds of folk, classical and Americana among other genres.

Tin Hat recently played the Sundance Film Festival with Lou Reed and concluded a European tour. They are currently prepping material for a forthcoming album that is largely vocal with a handful of instrumental tracks based on the wonderfully concise, bold and whimsical poetry of E. E. Cummings.
