Helen Sung.

Pianist/composer Helen Sung hails from Houston, TX. An aspiring classical pianist before jazz intervened during undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin, Sung went on to graduate from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and win the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition. Now based in New York City, Sung has worked with a “Who’s Who” in Jazz, including the late Clark Terry, Dianne Reeves, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, Esperanza Spalding and Regina Carter. With five albums as leader, Sung’s sixth and newest release Anthem For A New Day (Concord Jazz) topped jazz radio charts and garnered a SESAC Performance Activity Award. With appearances at major festivals/venues including Newport, Monterey, Detroit, SFJAZZ, and Carnegie Hall, Sung is also stepping onto the international stage with tours of southern Africa, Europe, UK, China and Mexico. The burly tone of Grammy® Award-winning multi-reedist Joe Lovano is one of the most recognizable sounds in modern jazz. As a decorated sideman, he’s been heard with everyone from Woody Herman, Dave Holland, McCoy Tyner, Mel Lewis Orchestra, Herbie Hancock, Dr. Lonnie Smith and countless others. But most notably he’s been recognized as a high profile collaborator from the Saxophone Summit, to a trio with Paul Motion and Bill Frisell, and projects with Hank Jones, Esperanza Spalding and Elvin Jones. Since arriving in NYC, he has garnered national reviews and has led to collaborations with Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Antonio Sanchez, John Patitucci, Bill Stewart, Ben Street and many others. Valera is also the leader of his Grammy®-nominated band Manuel Valera and the New Cuban Express, a project deeply influenced by the experiments of Cuban artists from the 70s and 80s that mixes elements of jazz, R&B, Latin Jazz and funk. In addition, he has been awarded several grants for composition including the prestigious Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works plus he has been the recipient of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award.
