Tia Fuller Quartet (Early Show)

When Mack Avenue recording artist Tia Fuller picks up her sax to play, something amazing happens as the reverberations of her musical elixir fill the room. It is her uncanny ability to do so that led Tia to be selected as a member and featured soloist of pop/R&B star Beyoncé’s touring band with whom Tia has played all throughout the US, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, including a high profile gig for former President Barack Obama at The White House. Tia is also an accomplished bandleader, having recorded four albums with her own quartet. Still in his early thirties, drummer/composer Mark Guiliana, is at the forefront of top drummers in the world for creating an entirely new vernacular on the instrument – blending virtuosic skills on acoustic drums alongside electronic elements and processing. Guiliana’s prowess, conceptual approach and unmistakable sound were recently featured in Blackstar, the critically and commercially acclaimed final studio recording from the late, great David Bowie. Marquis Hill Blacktet (Early Show)

Trumpeter, composer and Thelonious Monk Competition winner Marquis Hill was raised on Chicago’s South Side with his introduction to music was made by taking up the drum kit in the fourth grade before picking up the trumpet. Hill had a natural feel for the instrument and soon developed his signature warm, mellifluous tone that has drawn comparisons to Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. Upon finalizing his formal education with a Master of Music degree in Jazz Pedagogy from DePaul University, Hill moved to NYC and began working frequently as a sideman with the likes of Joe Lovano, Milton Suggs, and Von Freeman, and as the leader of his own ensemble Blacktet.  Hill has five albums to his credit, including his most recent release with Blacktet entitled The Way We Play, his 2016 debut for the esteemed Concord Jazz label, that focuses on inventive interpretations of jazz standards flavored with touches of post-bop swing and hip…

Jean Baylor & Marcus Baylor’s highly anticipated collaboration is steeped in the heart and soul of Jazz. As the children of Pastors, Marcus and Jean’s musical roots were planted deep within the church, and it was there that the road was paved for the influence of gospel, blues, soul, and jazz to make it’s mark. Marcus, a St. Louis native, is widely recognized as the former drummer of the 3-time Grammy® Award winning jazz quartet, the Yellowjackets. While studying and graduating from The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, he performed and recorded with musical icons Cassandra Wilson and Kenny Garrett. Since then, Marcus has come into his own as a composer, arranger, producer and bandleader. Jean was a Vocal Performance Major at Temple University, where she was heavily influenced by artists such as Carmen McCrae, Jimmy Scott, and Shirley Horn.
