Ryan Meagher & All Across the City

August 1 | 7:30 pm

ATTN PDX JAZZ MEMBERS: Please email info@pdxjazz.com for special Member discount code! Portland guitarist Ryan Meagher (pronounced Marr) views this performance as a tribute to one of the most underrated quartets in jazz history. The light and lyrical sound of Paul Desmond had a much deeper output than being a sideman in Dave Brubeck’s Quartet. The quartets Desmond led alongside guitarist Jim Hall and drummer Connie Kay had a revolving door of top-call bassists but always maintained a focused aesthetic with no frills. Meagher’s usual quartet is comprised of some of Portland’s most intellectual, sensitive, and virtuostic improvisers on their respective instruments. Together, they wil play music from the RCA recordings of the Desmond/Hall quartet recorded from 1959-1965, as well as some original music inspired by this group. The Metropolitan Youth Symphony will provide a string section to accompany the quartet as special guests for this unique, one-time only engagement. www.ryanmeagher.com
