Black Swan Classic Jazz Band

Black Swan Classic Jazz Band is an entertaining, artistic group that loves performing hot jazz, ragtime and old-time gospel with a distinctive, original flair. Formed in early 1989 by leader Kit Johnson as a hot dance band dedicated to the preservation and performance of early jazz styles, Black Swan expanded its repertoire to include ragtime with the addition of pianist John Bennett in 1992, and to include blues and old-time gospel when elegant vocalist Marilyn Keller joined the fray in 1997. Black Swan has performed for numerous jazz societies, festivals, performing arts groups, and community events in Oregon, Montana, Arizona, Washington, Missouri, Iowa, California, the Caribbean, Alaska and British Columbia. Their book features nearly 400 selections, most of which were arranged by Kit, John and clarinetist Steve Matthes. Donny McCaslin Group

Donny McCaslin is a celebrated and Grammy® Award-nominated saxophonist and composer from Santa Clara, California. As a child he joined his father’s band at the age of 12, and as a teenager he made his debut at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival before embarking on tours of Europe and Japan. Subsequently, McCaslin received a full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, and in 1991 he moved to New York City which led him to performing with the Gil Evans Orchestra, Maria Schneider, John Medeski, Uri Craine, Antonio Sanchez , Dave Douglas and many others before becoming a bandleader in his own right with 11 albums to date under his name. After moving his music in a more electric direction in the 2000’s, McCaslin began collaborating with David Bowie in 2014, which later led McCaslin to become Bowie’s saxophonist for the rock icon’s 2016 album, Blackstar. Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet

Born and raised in Oakland, California, trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire was a member of the Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble when he caught the attention of saxophonist Steve Coleman. Akinmusire was asked to join Coleman’s Five Elements, embarking on a European tour when he was just a 19-year-old student at the Manhattan School of Music. After returning to the West Coast to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Southern California, Akinmusire went on to attend the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in Los Angeles, where he studied with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Terence Blanchard. In 2007 Akinmusire won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and released his debut album Prelude…To Cora on the Fresh Sound label later that year.
