Our first concert of the 2017 PDX Jazz Festival, with help from our friends at Portland’5 Centers for the Arts, features two contemporary jazz icons on the same stage at the same time –  NEA Jazz Master and saxophonist Branford Marsalis plus Grammy® Award-winning singer Kurt Elling. This incomparable duo, along with Marsalis’s quartet made up of Joey Calderazzo (piano), Eric Revis (bass) and Justin Faulkner (drums) will be performing in support of their brand new album on Marsalis Music/Okeh Records, Upward Spiral, that features Elling as special guest vocalist. Upward Spiral is a collection of tunes that blends songbook staples, jazz standards, and standards-to-be from a diverse array of composers. Every track they have done confirms the beyond-category strengths of both the Quartet and Elling, allowing both vocalist and musician ample room to improvise, shine and hold the spotlight. After years of discussion and speculation, Marsalis and Elling have finally joined forces for a performance that…

MEMBERS ONLY PRESALE BEGINS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5 AT 12pm! Maria Schneider’s music has been hailed by critics as “evocative, majestic, magical, heart-stoppingly gorgeous, and beyond categorization.”  She and her orchestra became widely known starting in 1994 when they released their first recording, Evanescence.  There, Schneider began to develop her personal way of writing for what would become her 18-member collective, made up of many of the finest musicians in jazz today, tailoring her compositions to distinctly highlight the uniquely creative voices of the group.  The Maria Schneider Orchestra has performed at festivals and concert halls worldwide.  She herself has received numerous commissions and guest-conducting invites, working with over 85 groups from over 30 countries. Schneider’s music blurs the lines between genres, making her long list of commissioners quite varied, stretching from Jazz at Lincoln Center, to The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, to collaborating with David Bowie.  She is among a small few…

MEMBERS ONLY PRESALE BEGINS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5 at 12pm! In celebration of what would have been Dizzy Gillespie’s 100th birthday, the 2017 Biamp PDX Jazz Festival presents an exciting double bill of jazz featuring the legendary Heath Brothers and Javon Jackson’s Sax Appeal. Jimmy and Albert “Tootie” Heath have recorded and collaborated with nearly all the jazz greats of the last 50 years. Saxophonist and NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath spent his formative years working with Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Erroll Garner, and Coleman Hawkins. Likewise, drummer Tootie Heath has recorded and performed with John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Art Farmer, Sonny Rollins, Nina Simone, Herbie Hancock, Yusef Lateef and many others. While the two brothers recorded together on Jimmy’s solo records in the 1960s, it wasn’t until they formed The Heath Brothers with Percy Heath on bass and Stanley Cowell on piano that the Heaths became household names in…
