Charles Lloyd Quartet

February 19 | 7:00 pm

Growing up in Memphis, Tennessee, Charles Lloyd found himself in a rich culture of music that included blues, gospel and jazz including a legendary early in life encounter with Howlin’ Wolf.  He later educated himself in the LA jazz scene by watching and playing with legends like Ornette Coleman, Billy Higgins, and Charlie Haden. It wasn’t long until Lloyd became the musical director of Chico Hamilton’s group.  After joining the Cannonball Adderley Sextet in 1964, he began to record as a leader, which gained him recognition from DownBeat, and was voted “New Star.” Since this illustrious beginning to his career, and the formation of his first groundbreaking quartet featuring Keith Jarrett, and Jack DeJohnette, the 2015 NEA Jazz Master continues to challenge and re-invent musical norms with various collaborations. His return to Blue Note Records with Wild Man Dance, features an all-star ensemble playing a long-form six movement suite live that…

Africa/Brass Ensemble

February 26 | 7:00 pm
The Saxophone Summit is unprecedented. It features three of the most influential saxophonists of the past several decades teamed up with a rhythm section of extraordinary experience and skill. Musical situations like this are a rarity.
The Summit grew out of a concert in Japan called “Live By The Sea” in 1997, which was a commemoration of a concert done ten years earlier in Tokyo called “Live Under The Sky”. The subsequent DVD and recording of that concert has found its way around the world gaining notoriety in jazz circles.

The Africa/Brass Ensemble, under the direction of Portland Jazz Master and PSU Professor Emeritus Charles Gray with special guest Ravi Coltrane, brings John Coltrane’s first Impulse! album Africa/Brass into focus 55 years after the music was first recorded. All five selections culled from the two recording sessions have been transcribed by Gray for this For Portland Only occasion.  Portland’s finest musicians hand selected by Gray featuring unusual instrumentation of french horn and euphonium will project a big band sound supported by the rhythm section lead by Philadelphia native and McCoy Tyner disciple, Orrin Evans. This concert is one of two centerpiece performances featuring Ravi as part of the festival’s Coltrane @ 90 themed celebration.
