PDX Jazz has crafted a festival that is as unique as Portland itself for the 18th consecutive edition of the annual event, featuring ‘live’ performances – ‘live’ audiences – and ‘live’ real-time web streams each day. Venue capacity is limited to 50 guests per show and Jack London Revue has been overhauled with state-of-the art technology to provide an unparalleled experience for online guests.
West coast musicians ‘the best of the west’; Black Lives Matter; international shows, exclusive interviews, Portland premieres, education workshops; and women in jazz are themes woven into the fabric of this year’s event.
The Festival kicks-off on Thursday, February 18th with a free PDX Jazz Members only web stream of the Opening Night Celebration from Biamp World Headquarters. Ticketed shows commence on Friday, February 19th with Harold López-Nussa “Live from Havana”, flanked by Cyrus Nabipoor at Jack London Revue performing “Live at the Marigny Opera House”, which was recorded in New Orleans. The GRAMMY® award-winning Prince protégé, Judith Hill, arrives from Los Angeles to take the stage Saturday night, sharing the electrifying voice that has landed her on tours with Michael Jackson, Josh Groban and John Legend. Saeeda Wright, Alonzo Chadwick and Arietta Ward bring a Gospel inspired performance to the Festival on Sunday, the 20th.
As the full Festival week begins, an array of Portland premieres unfold including Brian Jackson “The Gil Scott Heron & Brian Jackson Songbook” with greaterkind, Teodross Avery Quartet “Harlem Stories: The Music of Thelonious Monk”, and Marcus Shelby Quartet “Black Music and Freedom”. In partnership with Hollywood Theatre, two jazz films will launch online mid-week, “Herb Alpert Is…” and, “Buster Williams Bass to Infinity”. “The American Refrain: Jazz and Modern Music”, a commissioned work arranged by Noah Simpson for PDX Jazz education, will make its debut during the Festival. Wayne Horvitz’ The Royal We closes out the Festival on Saturday, February 27th.
Chris Doss, PDX Jazz Executive Director states “the team at PDX Jazz is committed to serving the community of Portland with exceptional one-of-a-kind entertainment experiences. In addition to preparing to safely host ‘live’ audiences at the upcoming Festival, PDX Jazz has bolstered the virtual experience and launched a new online membership level that starts at $50 annually. Evolution and celebration of live performance are central to our mission and with some courage, ingenuity and persistence we are excited to share that Portland will have a jazz festival in 2021.”
