INDABA IS newly composed improvised music and jazz created by South Africa’s blooming new school jazz scene and produced and managed by Creative Directors, award-winning pianist Thandi Ntuli and ‘The Brother Moves On’ bandleader Siyabonga Mthembu.

“A thoughtful examination of the several routes along which modern South African jazz has arrived and a thought-provoking pointer towards where it may be going. It is, also, a lot of fun.” All About Jazz ★★★★

DAY 1 “Homage to our Roots” features:

  • Sibusile Xaba (vox, keys) with Naftali and Fakazile (vox), AshK (soundscape), Mthokozisi Mazibuko (congas), Agoh (djembe) in an eclectic improvised set.
  • A Prayer for HealingAboMvelase feat. Kinsmen, Pulane Mafatshe & Miseka Gaqa
  • Nduduzo Makhathini (Blue Note, The Ancestors) in the Zoom Room with Andile Yenana, Natalia Molebatsi and Ayanda Sikade – inspirational artists to the INDABA IS Collective from the dawn of freedom in South Africa until now.

INDABA IS a compilation of the freshest current South African improvised music and jazz (on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings) is the third in a series of albums highlighting the dynamic global jazz scene.

Like the cosmopolitan musical ferment in Johannesburg, this new compilation illustrates the many legacies each generation of musicians have inherited and features Bokani Dyer, Lwanda Gogwana, The Brother Moves On,Thandi Ntuli, The Wretched, Sibusile Xaba, The Ancestors and Iphupho likaBiko. Thandi Ntuli and Siyabonga Mthembu are an evanescent presence on each of the pieces, perfectly illustrating the role of musicians-turning-creative directors.

Sibusile Xaba, the charismatic guitar, keys and vocal savant reframes maskandi and the avant garde into his own humanist manifesto. With a vocal style that is part dreamscaping and part ancestral invocation, Xaba divines as opposed to plainly singing. Combined with a guitar style that is rooted in expressive picking, Xaba’s music shatters the confines of genre
