Jack London Revue presents Mel Brown B-3 Organ Group with special guest Michalangela
February 27 | 8:00 pm- $15
This event is 21+
The Mel Brown B-3 Organ Group, dubbed “Jimmy Mak’s signature band” by The Oregonian, performed at the famed Pearl District jazz venue on Thursday nights for the club’s entire twenty-year run. When George Benson heard the group, he said, “If this band played in New York City, they’d be a sensation!” The Oregonian’s Kyle O’Brien described the band’s unique style as, “the sound of spontaneity.”
Sadly, Jimmy Mak’s is no more due to Jimmy’s untimely death from cancer on January 1, 2017 — one day following the club’s final show. But following a 5-month hiatus, the Mel Brown B-3 Organ Group started up again on Thursday nights at a beautiful, newly-renovated venue, the Jack London Revue on June 1, 2016. The large, downstairs room has the feel of classic jazz clubs of the ’50s & ’60s!
Past festival appearances include the Mt Hood Jazz Festival, the PDX Jazz Festival, Jazz at Newport, the Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival (with Phil Upchurch), the Britt Festival (opening for George Benson in ’03 and for Mary Wilson in ’07), the Bite of Portland (twice), the Rose Festival, Jazz in the Valley (four times), the Port Townsend Jazz Festival, Jazz & Oysters (twice), Jazz at the Oxford (twice), Vancouver Wine & Jazz, and many more.
Michalangela, full name Michal Angela Wilson, was raised in a musical home in Moscow, Idaho, the second child of a pastor father and music teacher mother. Upon graduating high school, Michal stayed close to home to obtain her Music Education Degree at the University of Idaho’s Lionel Hampton School of Music, graduating with a degree in Voice in 2006. Michal moved to Portland shortly thereafter.
Influenced by artists including Erykah Badu, Hiatus Kaiyote, Little Dragon and Emily King, Michalangela combines elements of neo-soul, R&B, jazz and rock into an intricate and accessible sound. Michalangela’s band members are Alex Milsted (Saeeda Wright, Metta & Earth) on keyboards, Trent Baarspul (Reed Grimm, New Sound Underground) on guitar, JP Downer (Portland Cello Project, Farnell Newton, Elke Robitaille) on bass, and Tyrone Hendrix (Portland Cello Project, Liv Warfield, Mike Phillips, Doo Doo Funk All-Stars, Tony Furtado) on drums.
