2020 Biamp PDX Jazz Festival presents Michael Raynor Quintet

Drummer Michael Raynor splits his time between Portland and Chicago, where he spent more than 20 years playing with tenor saxophone icon and NEA Jazz Master, Von Freeman. Raynor has toured with legendary jazz vocalist Kurt Elling and can be heard on two of his GRAMMY-nominated recordings, including Live in Chicago, featuring vocalese master Jon Hendricks. Michael has worked with luminaries including Freddie Hubbard, Eric Alexander, Tia Fuller, Steve Coleman, Gary Bartz, Johnny Griffin, Ira Sullivan, Jon Faddis, Bob Sheppard, Bobby Broom, Fareed Haque, Howard Levy, Arturo Sandoval, Chuck Israels, Nancy King and Bob Dorough, among others.
In addition to playing festivals and smaller venues throughout Europe, North America and Australia, Raynor has twice toured as a US Jazz Ambassador. In 2004, under the artistic direction of the Kennedy Center, he traveled across Southeast Asia and in 2012, under artistic direction of Jazz at Lincoln Center, he toured southern Africa as co-leader of the Dennis Luxion & Michael Raynor Quartet. Both itineraries included performance, teaching and collaboration with local musicians. He can often be heard around town leading his own groups as well as collaborating with Portland’s finest.
