Nicole McCabe is a Portland-based alto saxophonist who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a graduate of Portland State University where she was mentored by George Colligan, with whom she now works regularly in the band Theoretical Planets. Nicole’s influences date back to Johnny Hodges and Lester Young, as well as bebop influences like Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins. Post-bop players John Coltrane and Gary Bartz also loom large for Nicole. Her musical goals are to understand the tradition of jazz and move it forward with newer styles of composing and improvising. McCabe has shared the stage with Nicole Glover, Carmen Lundy, Steve Wilson, Alan Jones, Randy Porter, Chuck Israels, Terri Lyne Carrington, Tia Fuller, the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble, the Berklee 2018 Women’s jazz performance group and others. She leads a band that performs original compositions and jazz repertoire throughout the Portland region.
