Billy Hart (born November 29, 1940 in Washington, D.C.) is a jazz drummer and educator who has performed with some of the most important musicians in jazz history. Early on Hart performed with soul artists such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave, and then later with Buck Hill and Shirley Horn, and was a sideman with the Montgomery Brothers (1961), Jimmy Smith (1964–1966) and Wes Montgomery (1966–1968). Hart moved to New York in 1968, where he recorded with McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul, and played with Eddie Harris, Pharoah Sanders and Marian McPartland. Hart was a member of Herbie Hancock’s sextet (1969–1973), and played with McCoy Tyner (1973–1974), Stan Getz (1974–1977), and Quest (1980s), in addition to extensive freelance playing (including recording…

This event features Galen Clark in a solo piano performance. Galen is a Portland-based keyboardist and composer who leads the genre-bending soul jazz group Trio Subtonic and the funk collective Outer Orbit. Clark’s music explores a range of rock, soul, funk, hip hop and jazz that simultaneously draws in listeners and pushes boundaries. Galen has been teaching piano and composition for over 12 years in the Portland area. He received a BA in Music Composition from Lewis & Clark College, where he studied with Randy Porter and Forrest Pierce. Jonathan Smith is a guitarist, leading the Jonathan Smith Trio since 2011. Smith has worked with a host of local musicians including Marcus Reynolds, Carlton Jackson, Laura Cunard, Bo Ayars and Craig Bidondo. His trio, featuring organist Steve Hall and drummer David Burrow, is known for funky grooves and boogaloo music drawing from various influences, including the music of Grant Green and the legendary 1970s CTI recordings. Two Bass Hit is comprised of Ed Bennett and Shao Way Wu. Ed Bennett has long been considered one of the West Coast’s premiere upright bass players. Since the release of his latest album, Get Somethin’ (Ropeadope), guitarist, composer and producer Chance Hayden has garnered international acclaim as “a player who definitely knows how to get a lot of tone and color out of his instrument” (Dusty Groove). Ashley Kahn is a Grammy-winning American music historian, author, professor and producer. He teaches at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music and co-wrote Carlos Santana’s award-winning autobiography The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story To Light (Little, Brown, 2014). Often called a Renaissance man, jazz guitarist, composer, novelist, poet and educator Anson Wright has performed throughout the United States and abroad, including India. A graduate of Princeton, he left his graduate studies at Columbia to pursue both music and literary careers. In addition to his jazz albums, including the recently released Only Love, he has authored three books. His poetry was set to music by guitarist John Stowell in a 2008 spoken-word album, The Sky At Our Feet. Kerry Politzer is a Portland-based jazz pianist, composer, and educator. Since 2013, she has served on the music faculty at Portland State University, and as of Winter 2020, she will also be on the faculty at University of Portland. Kerry received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Piano from the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied improvisation and composition with the late jazz guru Charlie Banacos. She continues to be inspired by his teachings. John Stowell began his successful career in the early 1970s in private study with guitarist Linc Chamberland and pianist John Mehegan. Both men were valuable mentors to John, allowing him to play with them as he progressed in his development. Several years later he met bassist David Friesen in New York City, and they formed a duo that recorded and toured prolifically for seven years, with performances in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia. In 1983, John and David joined flutist Paul Horn and Paul’s son Robin Horn (on drums) for a historic tour of the Soviet Union.
