He began playing drums and percussion as a toddler, playing in church and along with an eclectic array of LPs his siblings would have on rotation. The youngest of five, Royston attributes his musical interests and palate to his siblings and parents. Rudy’s older brothers and sister were avid listeners of all genres of music, his mother a constant support, and his father the supervisor of shipping at an established children’s percussion instrument making company. This event is 21+ The Mel Brown B-3 Organ Group, dubbed “Jimmy Mak’s signature band” by The Oregonian, performed at the famed Pearl District jazz venue on Thursday nights for the club’s entire twenty-year run.  When George Benson heard the group, he said, “If this band played in New York City, they’d be a sensation!”  The Oregonian’s Kyle O’Brien described the band’s unique style as, “the sound of spontaneity.” Sadly, Jimmy Mak’s is no more due to Jimmy’s untimely death from cancer on January 1, 2017–one day following the club’s final show.  But following a 5-month hiatus, the Mel Brown B-3 Organ Group started up again on Thursday nights at a beautiful, newly-renovated venue, the Jack London Revue on June 1, 2016.  The large, downstairs room has the feel of classic jazz…

Originally a drummer and percussionist, Matt Tabor began to pursue piano at age 18 while attending Portland State University, after meeting pianist Darrell Grant. Since graduating Matt has made a name for himself in the jazz scene, leading his own trio and playing as a sideman with local and national acts including Christopher Brown, Kamasi Washington, Devin Phillips, Chance Hayden and Tony Starlight. Matt has also worked extensively in the theater world, serving as musical director and composer for The August Wilson Red Door Project (Kevin Jones, director) and collaborating with his father on the Portland Area Musical Theater Award-winning musical, Recognition.

Jasnam Daya Singh plays piano and leads PJCE in a performance of his Ektah: The Unity Project, an evening-length piece dedicated to cultivating a collective sense of belonging. Presented in cooperation with PDX Jazz. Singh’s Ektah, commissioned by PJCE for the Montavilla Jazz Festival in 2017, is a multi-movement suite that incorporates a wide-range of tributaries of the jazz stylistic river—Brazilian choro and samba of Singh’s country of birth, expansive European jazz and classical styles, and high-energy straight-ahead jazz. The Portland-based composer and player maintains a steady stream of activity, whether that’s teaching at various schools throughout the Northwest, performing regular gigs around his hometown, or writing thoughtful music that spans the vast spectrum of jazz music, from post-bop to Latin to avant-garde. Meagher’s forward momentum was fomented early, during his teen years growing up in San Jose, California, where he split his time between taking baseball practice and working out his guitar chops in a series of youthful garage bands.
